Burdur I

November 1, 2012

The Anatolian city of Burdur is not as close to the lake with the same name as one would expect. There is a beautiful archeological museum instead. The museum contains the findings of the excavations conducted in the area, at Kremna and Sagalassos. probably the best thing on display here are the two heads of the emperors Hadrian and Marcus Aurelius.
Frankly, what impressed me most in this mountain city was the monument next to the Valilik (prefecture). I will discuss it in greater detail as soon as a I can dowload the pictures my friend AP took of it. Built in 1973, in the shape of a crescent, it represents a few moments of the history of the Turkish people. It’s a coherent expression of Turkish ethnic national, and celebrates key moment of national identity: the exit from ergenekon, the Selciukids (the byzantines were also represented!), the conquest of Costantinople, the war of Salvation. It really deserves a discussion, and I hope to be able to post the pictures.
Burdur also has a newly opened university. That’s why we ended up sleeping in the Otel ve pensyon Anadolu, a sort of university dorm with single ceiling light, and four beds, à la turca toilettes and no sign of a shower.
